workhouse burials riddle solved

Posted by Mary McCarthy -Jones on April 18, 2007 at 09:40:54:

I was recently speaking to an elderly resident of the Town about the whereabouts of the remains of people that were buried behind the Sacred Heart Hospital. He was a young labourer at the time and personnally witnessed what happened to them. They were dug up and put into canvas bags & left aside the site. Then before the building commenced a large pit was dug & the bones scattered into the pit.Quicklime was then applied & shortly afterwards, the building of the extension started. He never gave it much thought-There was no regulations to speak off in thopse days but now, thinking back he's horrified at what happened.
