Larminie :
Only established as an Irish family since the early eighteenth century and the name is rare today, but it was quite numerous in Co. Mayo prior to the Great Famine. From these people came the poet William Larminie (1849-1900). The founder of the family in Ireland was a London flax dresser who in 1721 leased land in Newport, Co. Mayo. He was Samuel Larminie (1693-1757), son of François Larminie of Picardy, a Huguenot refugee. The poet was great-grandson of this Samuel born at Castlebar. In France the name was usually Lerminier and was associated in that country with the weaving industry.
