Usually with the annual election of Chairpersons / Mayors to local authorities, there’s a bit of drama. In Westport, at the last meeting of the UDC in 1944, 3 persons took the coveted position. Cllr. Ml. McCormack was elected to the chair pro tem in the absence of the Chairman & Vice-Chairman. He was just getting into his stride when the Vice-Chairman arrive , followed a short time later by the Chairman. The seat was eventually yielded to the Chairman, amidst laughter & comments such as consulting record books and wondering about first citizen(s), receiving gifts etc.
