You may have missed Brian Hobans comment on the main BB Jacobite.
"these are the remains of a norman Tower House. J.F. Quinn in his "History of Mayo" refers to it as home of the Gunning sisters. this i believe to be inaccurate as Gunning sisters came from the Castlerea area in co. Roscommon. the truth is that very little is known of this site. the field in which it stands was known locally as the castle field when i was young. we used to swim near here at a place known as "the Point" . There is a fort beside the lake here from which Blackfort takes its name. Also the remains of a crannog- indicating habitation here from iron age times."
