seeking mcandrew descendants in belmullet

Posted by Margie on August 17, 2007 at 15:47:45:

This may not be the place to post this. Thus, if I break any rules, please let me know and I won't do it again .a..

My grandmother, Mary McAndrew, was born in County Mayo on August 1, 1853.

She immigrated to America around 1864 with at least two siblings: Edward McAndrew (who died in Pittsburgh, PA in 1916) and Kate (Catherine?) McAndrew (who married a CLOONEY ... and the last correspondence I have shows she was in Kingston, NY in 1911 ... don't know if she died there or elsewhere).

I know at least one sibling, John McAndrew, remained in County Mayo ... and I'm wondering if other siblings remained in County Mayo as well?

Somehow in 1959, my mother came across some letters for the period 1910-1916 between Mary McAndrew with her brother Edward (in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), sister Kate (in Kingston, New York), and a nun at the Convent of Our Lady of Mercy in Belmullet about another brother, John McAndrew.

From this correspondence, I discovered that John McAndrew died on March 3, 1913 at the convent in Belmullet.

I was only about 14 years old in 1959 and wrote a couple of letters to the Convent.

I discovered that the nun (Sister Mary of the Angels J) who'd cared for John McAndrew while he was sick in the hospital there had died in 1957.

In the only other letter I have the Mother Superior (Sr. M Muredach) stated in her letter of 07 January 1960 that "There was a relative of John's buried yesterday, a William McAndrew of Glencastle. He had twenty-one children all now doing for themselves, one a Nun on the Foreign Mission -- the name is very plentiful in and around Belmullet."

If anyone knows descendants of this William McAndrew ... or how he's related to John McAndrew that died in 1913 and/or to the Nun, please contact me at:

mcowan @ erols.com

I'd also like to know where John McAndrew was buried ... as well as William.

I don't know whether John was married and/or had children.

Obviously, William was married and left a very large family. Those 21 children probably have grandchildren or greatgrandchildren by now ...

I do so hope to make contact with my McAndrew relatives in Belmullet, Co. Mayo, Ireland!

Again ... if anyone can help me, please email me at:
mcowan @ erols.com

Many thanks.
