I remember the lowest part of Castle Street flooding in years gone by - I was told that this was the groundwater seeping up from where the town river ran but I'd imagine that it was just a case of poor drainage.

Castlebar is a small town but as evidenced in the amount of construction that took place in times past (look at the extensive wall work used on the military barracks) it's not outside of the realms of possibility to think that the river course was re-engineered.

I guess the only definitive way to find this out would be core samples along the various routes, it should be possible to detect layered river bed (not flood plain) sediments in the gardens at the back of Ellison street, I wonder did they come across anything unusual or indicative when constructing the 'new street' in this location?
