People from outlying areas would come to town on that day & sell tyrkeys etc. and also do their major shopping for the festive season. Jack the Bladder was a character that would goaround the town on St. Stephen's Day with the bladder of a cow attached to a stick. the children would come up to him & call him "Jack the Bladder." He would then give them chase. The tradition is connected to the mummers and waits custom-originally old English customs . |
