The story about salmon in the local river is a myth. Salmon could not have reached the town due to an impassable natural rock barrier down at Turlough - just there at the bridge where they used to start the duck race.

The barrier had a fish pass cut into it in the past few years - only in the last five or six years or so I think - by the fisheries board.

Our Fisheads may have been eating salmon caught in Ballina or Newport but they were not caught in the local section of the Castlebar River.

About 30 years ago the river used to run red with blood and guts from the bacon factory - remember the smell of the place? The river has much improved since then with new sewage treatment so there is a possibility that the town section of the river will have salmon for the first time ever. (But having said that there is not much in the way of suitable spawning upstream of Lough Lannagh - streams are too small for salmon. It's unlikely that even if the river was pristine in terms of water quality that it would ever have much in the way of a salmon run.
