The Rev. Ellison was indeed the Church Of Ireland rector in Castlebar at the time of the 1798 rebellion. He was in Killala at a church meeting when the French forces arrived and received a bullet/musket-ball wound to his heel, and taken prisoner, while defending the town.He was also a magistrate and land-agent for Lord Lucan ans was not popular around the county. He was one of about twenty English prisoners released by the French before they left Castlebar. You can read more about this infamous man in The Last Invasion Of Ireland by Richard Hayes. The book is available in the Castlebar library.
