This month forty years ago, a national competition was held to select the best design for a wrought-iron representation of St. Anthony, to be attached to the façade of the then new St. Anthony’s Special School, Castlebar. The winner was R. Uhlemann, a student of the College of Art, Dublin and he received the prize of 25 guineas, donated by the school architect, Messrs. Taylor & Veale. There was 22 entries & the judges included Archdeacon Wm. Nohilly, PP, Miss P.O’Brien, Irish Times, M.J.Egan & Tom Fallon, School Trustees and a number of local journalists.
