Standing outside their front or back window watching - usually with five or six other kids - with the shimmer of the black and white screen irradiating you as surely as if the Cuba missile crisis had come to pass and you were watching an atomic bomb explode just as the Lone Ranger ponced across the screen on his white horse with his redskin partner or slave in tow. "Hi Ho Tonto - it's off to Work We Go" all that?

And of course with the music going 2:4 in the background: "deadant deadant deadant deadantdeadantdeadant" - (my favourite food - dead ants as the anteater used to say in the cartoon).

The big test when you hear the Lone Ranger music is - "Do you think of Rossini and Opera Bows and Arrows or just the Lone Ranger and black and white TV first when you hear it?" - If the first you are an intellectual! If the second you are just an old cowboy fan!

But then perhaps you were the first to have a telly in your area and the kids lined up outside your back window to watch it over your shoulder?
