a cara.....leon malinofsky wrote.....when one sits alone in the pale moons light....a sense of clearness and irradiate peace pervades the spirit...all things are masks in a world of silver order.....where everything is frozen and inconsequenstial....patterns supplants purpose....cool air enfolds care....and the soul emerges in the moonlight....and ascends translucent on its beams.....tonight....i sat out on my lofty balcony....gazing out on lake ontario....covered in a shroud of fog and mist.....which seemed to levitate...over the waters surface.....in the distance cars racing eastwards towrds the city...seemed ghost like as only their lights burned the murkiness of the eerie mist.....way out on the lake a merchant ships lights seemed to twikle and fade as the steamer headed for the welland canal....entrance to lake erie.....the silence of my canvass was broken by the din of my tv....which was alerting canadians to the claims and counter claims of the political adversaries......as i listened with faint ear ....my mind began to drift back to the reverborated echo of a politician in mayo .......my picture was quite clear now.....the stage was a truck trailer on ellison street....standing front line and centre was this rather large man.......his voice was shrill and west ireland....." when i entered politics in 1943 ireland was in a quare shtate.....was his cry.......people of cashtlebarr and the surrounding districts.....i wont engage miself in a tinkers fight with no man......standing grasping the microphone was none other than joe blowick.....joe had taken over the leadership of the clann na talmbhan....and was spearheading the attack on the governing of fianna fail....standing behind him was domenick cafferky .....and bernie commons.....also sitting beside them was a young henry kenny.....who was on the platform as an active fine gael member.....but this was the electioneering of 1948....the street was a buzz lit in lanterns.....down on main street outside irwins mens wear was another platform.....miceal omorain and fianna fail....here too crowds had gathered to listen to the hackneyed rhetoric of seasoned politicians....back again on ellison street as the speeches and the promises and the political pitches aroused the emotions of the crowds.....jack cassidy had a question for mr. blowick......standing beside jack was his old sidekick tommy darcy.....jacks concern was legitamate enough if somewhat incredible....what about the working man ....he asked.....joe stood firm in his response....i'll go as far as that.....the fianna fail party bought tulyar at a total cosht of 50,000.00 pounds and the horse hashn't been heard of sense.....im so poor ican't afford the soap to have a wash...what about the dole....cries another heckler.....i intend to introduce a law... retorts joe ...that will guarantee mixed bathing for the unemployed....the atmoshere on ellison street was electric when who comes along but francis philbin....our young are like greyhounds....cries francis....they're all running for the north wall....old pat langan could be seen looking out his window atop his shop.....down at the other end ....of the the circus on main street ....dr mattie....the local doctor ....but to many a god....introduces his brother miceal....miceal o morain local solicitor had a certain movie star image soave, dapper, intelligent....and an accomplished orator....paddy quinn sat on the fianna fail dais attentive and enthusiastic....bernie freyne at his side...for about an hour an a half every pub from ellison street to main street was empty a performance never witnessed again....the arch at brownvilla flats was filled with bicycles un secured ...i might add....then as the rally to the flag ended ....the banter between the crowds began.....now there was arguments...and heated exchanges as neighbours and friends began to challenge each others position re the civil war....where were you when we were ambushed at kilmaine came the challenge....'go way ou' that wasn't it meself that was almost shot....after much heat....it was decided that the only way to settle it was with a pint....no better man....good on ya'.....
