I never knew the bacon factory myself, but my mother, Kathleen Gannon, was from Balloor and went to school with the Sisters of Mercy in Castlebar. She often told the story of her father, James "Sledge" Gannon, being on the crew that built it. On her very first day of school, around 1914, he was on his way home from the night shift when she and her sisters were heading into town to class.
My father was Anthony Mugan from Ballyheane. They both came to the United States in 1928.
