From what I recall, I think the French delegates didn't believe the Castlebar organisation or council were committed enough to the entire process and so essentially severed the link or ceased to put the effort into it themselves.

I visited the place twice myself on an independent basis without any "association" with Castlebar. The first time was back in 1991 when I visited an Irish shop called "La Reve Irlandais" selling Tayto and all sorts of other Irish stuff run by a very pleasant and enthuastic gentleman, who was most delighted to welcome a solo Castlebar visitor on a bicycle to his town and shop. More recently I visited last July and can report that there was no trace or note whatsoever of the towns links or associations with Castlebar that I could see anyway. Enjoyed a rather delightful stroll around the lower old town down at the old quay where the old sailing ship is moored and where, apparently Benjamin Franklin made landfall as the first US ambassador to France.
