When Castlebar jail was demolished in the late 1930s to make way for the County Hospital some of the material from building was used to build the embankments in McHale Park. On the way to the park a large stone fell from a tractor trailer opposite the house occupied by the Fox family (later occupied by Dr. John Langan and Dr. Noel Hynes) on the Station Road. It was known as the "jail stone." When the road was being redesigned the stone was taken away for safe keeping. A small piece of local history.
