a cara.......in the rush for the "big top"...mick gavin ....mick lacey and myself....ignored the shop that stood at the gates to the fairgreen......but i can still see that shop....nicely pebbled dashed....sadly i forget the owners.....larry burke from sprinfield....incidentally a man with a voice..... was going in at the same time...as was larry mchale.....i always envied larry mchale .....although he was older than i ....he became known as the jolson of castlebar.....i too in those days did my jolson thing but without the larry mchale authority.....up front i noticed peggy moylette and biddie guthrie....and martha ruane{pansy creshams wife}.....bridie and mary warrington and binie gannon were also in the queue....as was mrs.flynn and mrs fallon.....eventually we were filtered into the arena.....we stood for a moment so as to supposedly pick the best seat in the house.....the tent began to fill up and there was a reverborating cacaphonic voice noise....evrybody was expressing their views of what was to come....j'asus...i heard from my sister in galway their mighty...said one....i heard they were good came a reply.....hi frank how's she cuttin' came a blast from some where...is it yu'self thats in it....enquired someone else...get your arsh on a seat came a reply....it's going to begin in a mithe shuffling for seats continued as the place began to fill up....there was an electric buzz......... the odd rat from the dumps in the green made a quick entry and a quicker exit ....perhaps they too wondered what all the excitement was about.....the fair green in those days was also the dumping site and there were umteen mounds all over....another time i will talk about how "big" pat moylette mickey waters and myself used to look for treasures in those dups.....its almost show time and a deadly silence falls over the throng.....it was almost if every one was going to break out in prayer.....there was a drum roll......and....a shuffle behind the curtain........the excitement grew......... |
