Posted by Royal on July 20, 2009 at 19:41:24: It's nearly 40 years ago since the famous first Moon landing by the Apollo 11 crew Neil Armstrong, Commander; Michael Collins, command module pilot; and, Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot. Back in Mayo, according to the Connaught Telegraph, the 20 proud residents of a small village were considering changing the name of their village to 'Columbia' – the name of the orbiting module. The wife of Michael Collins who piloted the orbiting command module, was the daughter of a man who left the village as a youngster. Patricia Collins' father, James left Lissiniskea, near Claremorris and emigrated to Boston. He had a brother still living there in 1969 and two more a few miles away at Cloonfaughna. Does anyone know if this 'namechange' was ever carried out?
