Moonlandings & Mayo

Posted by Royal on July 20, 2009 at 19:41:24:

It's nearly 40 years ago since the famous first Moon landing by the Apollo 11 crew Neil Armstrong, Commander; Michael Collins, command module pilot; and, Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot.

Back in Mayo, according to the Connaught Telegraph, the 20 proud residents of a small village were considering changing the name of their village to 'Columbia' the name of the orbiting module.

The wife of Michael Collins who piloted the orbiting command module, was the daughter of a man who left the village as a youngster. Patricia Collins' father, James left Lissiniskea, near Claremorris and emigrated to Boston. He had a brother still living there in 1969 and two more a few miles away at Cloonfaughna.

Does anyone know if this 'namechange' was ever carried out?
