Hi Sarah. I have been lucky to trace my family right back to the 1790s so have a little experience in looking for these records.
The GRO in Roscommon (www.groireland.ie) have civil birth, death & marriage records from 1864 but they need to know the area of birth, the approx year, and at least the father's name but the mother's maiden name would be very helpful to eliminate other possibilities.
The best place to look is in the church records for baptism as these may also contain other family information. In Mayo, church records have all been transcribed & are available to view (free up-to-a-point) at www.ifhf.brsgenealogy.com. This site contains baptisms, marraiges, deaths, census & Griffiths Valuation records.
I wish you the best of luck as it's a very rewarding experience! And if I can help you in any further way, please give me a shout.
