The shop was indeed known as Brian Hobans. My mother originally opened a shop in rented premises at Hamrock's opposite the old vocational school.

We moved to location opposite Presbytery about 1952.As far as I know our shop opened the dame day as Paddy Jennings opened a shop on the site of the present TF Royal Hotel.

My mother initailly ran the shop as my dad worked as chief clerk in Western Hats. After being made redundant from Western Hats in the early 1960's my dad took over running of shop due to my mothers ill health.

I was involved in the shop from an early age. In fact I did a newspaper delivery run around Newtown St, Chapel Street,Tucker St. and Linenhall Street each day before I started school.

After completing my Leaving cert in St. Geralds in 1972 I took over running of the shop. I continued working in shop until 1989, when the council acquired the premises by compulsory purchase order .

I enjoyed the time I spent working as a newsagent and built up a considerable amount of goodwill over the years. I made many friends during the years i spent in business and can honestly say that I never made any enemies in business.

I missed the shop for several years and after several training courses in computers, business skills etc. I eventually qualified as a local guide at GMIT.I still work on a freelance basis as a heritage guide and enjoy every moment of it.

Fond regards to all my friends and former customers.

BRIAN HOBAN.
