What you wrote is absolutely true!

Even as a child, I saw through the blatant social pecking order that existed all through national school in Castlebar, and elsewhere, I'm sure.
It sickened me how some teachers would pick regularly on certain lads - often subjecting them to brutal physical and demeaning mental abuse.

Very few parents ever had the nerve to come to school to challenge these brutes who should never have been left in charge of innocent vulnerable children in the first place.

Your dad's job or profession or social prominence, and/or your address determined whether you were likely to be abused in this way, or treated with simpering kid gloves.

The good old days, eh?
