a cara......the siocholonie had nothing to do way back then.....at lunch time one member stood at point duty at the 4 way cross main street ....ellison street....castle lane ....and shamble lane.......others hassled the tinkers.....and the night crew raided pubs......the chief was named butler....although there was also a detective named butler who lived in the houses opposite horkans....patsy fagan was station sgt....sgt.hubert glynn was in charge of customs ....and weights and measures....there was another detective who lived on chapel street....he drove a big ford custom....he lived in dr. graces old house.....
but enough about the siocholonie....this is about the mall......when i was in castlebar during my "lost weekend"....the udc had a big function on the mall....the french ambassador was invited.....it may have something to do with 1798 or perhaps a town twinning ceremony.....my father was chairman of the udc at the time....and he greeted the french dignataries.....but in the address to the town he annointed jack cahill to make the official greeting and address....jack of course had a grasp of francais......paddy jennings roasted a pigs and a beef in an open pit on the mall.....there were bands and entertainment....yes ...on the mall....bands entertained us to big song of the day....the barefoot pop princess....sandie shaws...theres always something there to remind me.....girls don't come.....and puppet on a string.....at the end of the night there were crubeen bones and beef bones everywhere.....no real worries about the grass or civic disorder.....ah!.....the mall was covered in french flags and bunting.....almost the green fields of france...me...well for awhile i helped paddy jennings....with the pit and later at the imperial ....for a few of arthurs black gold....then it was up to the green olive .....the mall has many a good story to tell.....
...la eile an sceil sin......
...anois...........
........... tog go bog e.......
