a cara......how well i remember ....radio luxemburg.....208 ...on the medium wave................david jacobs.....jimmy young....and of course pete murray......jimmy saville....tony blackburn joined the station in the '60's i was already long gone .....england ....and 1956 canada.... ...those commercials for h.samuel ever right......for us in the late forties early '50s....this was the spot......the station had a long running battle with the b.b.c.......and it did not penetrate our airspace until after the big one....w.w.2.....the station came on the air at 6p.m. with the sound of a gong.....it was here we got to listen to the current pop music......dan dare ....came on at 7.15p.m. sponsored .....by penguin......i used to know the jingle of by heart....we're marching along...etc.....pete murray ....he was the man on sunday nights ....with top of the pops.....he also did an irish request show....and his intr ...was ....if you're irish come into the parlour.....there's a welcome there for you.....
this station was a great breath of fresh air for us.....on saturday nights they had a programme called smash hits.....where they "smashed records"......how we tuned in weeknights to hear ....the sensational ...."perry mason.....and also the.....captivating.....dr. kildare.....i remember sitting on a cupboard glued to the radio.....our captivation with ...208.....often aborted some of our down town wanderings....we had to rush home to listen to these shows.....this is where i heard ....jo stafford sing.....you belong to me......and pattie page....
i met pete murray one time in london....with tommy harley......many years before he hit the big time....i met jimmy saville.....in manchester....he ran a dance hall ....
.....but back then.....we had many great radio shows.......family favourites.....on sunday lunch time ....requests for british military in germany ...and other outposts.....billy cotton band show....with his wakey...wakey....our own radio eireann did ...hospital requests.....the irish hospitals sweepstake...with bart bastable.....who can forget his ....sign off......it makes no difference where you are ...you can wish upon a star....this is bart bastable wishing you.......health ....wealth ....and good fortune...on saturday at 2p.m. we had a programme sponsored by waltons.....a good irish music show....we had roy croft ...and begginers please....who know our beginners of tonight ....may be our stars of tomorrow....myself jimmy murray...pete gavin...and dan ohearn...had along association with roy...when he brought his show to the country.....
in 1950....radio eireann produced ....a show ....come fly with me......a show dedicated to frank....ol'blue eyes....
there was no tv then ....so we developed our minds .....listening to radio.....
.....i punched the radio many a night when the signal faded......all the boys from windsor....turlough....errew ...belcrra ....could be seen ...bring home their wet batteries.....
speaking of turlough.....a character whose name escapes me at the moment ...was working on his.....perpetual light ...experiment.....pat lavelle was still proclaiming....shtick out your left.....danky was still running the bacon factory.....patsy "fagan" egan....was keeping the the young siocholoonie toe the line....fracie philbin still hurled his stick.....and jim barrett drve cis around in his harley davidson and side car....steam trains ...shunted their way to westland row.....
....la eile......
....anois....
.....tog go bog e.......
