Major McCormack was in the Gresham Hotel and the IRA unit gained access to his room by pretending to be British soldiers with important dispatches. When he opened the door he was shot and killed. It was thought Major McCormack's killing was a mistake. He was a member of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and was in Ireland to buy horses for the Army. Michael Collins himself later acknowledged the error.
