The real target was Captain L A Wilde who was a British Agent part of the 'Cario Gang'. He was also staying in the Gresham Hotel and shot the same morning.
15 men with revolvers turned up at the Hotel and went through the Hotel registar. 5 held the staff at gun point, and the other 10 first went to Major MacCormacks room and shot him four times while he was reading the morning paper and then went on to Captain Wildes room who heard them coming and got half way to the door before it openned and he was shot dead.

Major MacCormack was buried at Glasnevin Cemetrey on 24 Nov 1920
