Great memories. I lived on Spencer Street during the 1970’s/’80s and we had our bonfire in Jackie Elliott’s field which is now where Dr. Richard Tobin has his healthcare building. Other years it was held just over the wall in the Lawn and you had to climb over a broken down part of it to get there. It didn’t take long for the bonfire to be assembled because of a few large families; the Horkans and the Kings but we just to marvel at the gigantic bonfire, McHale used to make. The Redmonds and the Bartleys would pass us by in the street transporting a huge trunk of a tree or railway sleepers on makeshift carriages. Great characters from the street would attend at different times and a lot have now gone to their eternal reward; Katie Connolly was great fun when she arrived with Maureen, the famous Jackie Elliot, the Byrnes, Rodgers, Scrineys, different O’Connor families, etc
Brings back great memories.
