In my days behind the counter in the Humbert, I told the story of the 'jail' lock many times. However, it was pointed out to me that such a large lock would have been utterly impractical for keeping the felons of Mayo banged up. It could be picked with a hair pin or small knife, as was demonstrated to me, so would hardly be considered for a jail. More than likely, it was used for a barn or shed or stable. The strength of the lock would have withstood the hooves of a restless horse or the charge of an irate bullock but would be useless against the criminal masterminds of Mayo!
