a cara.......we were so fortunate to have had our formative years and early life in castlebar....and more to have been born on mchale road.....we were exposed to an amazing collage of experiences........the bacon factory being one.....it was way back in its heyday a major industry and financial bonanza for the town......it was an experience to see the workers who lived on the road make their way to the big white gates .....the men in their wellingtons....the ladies in their white coats and smocks.....and turbins.......but the most exciting of all was the constant drive of livestock down the road.....one time in one such cattle drive two cows with what appeared to be hide over bones bust through our railings and were in the front garden.......that was ok but the pile of dump they dropped on our walkway was no joke......as martin dolan yelled....jays....su...s get dowes cat...tle out...a there.....{everyone who knew martin knew he spoke with an unique lisp and stutter}......you mentioned the experience of your wife francis.....i could visualize her shock at a sow in your hallway.....many years ago i brought a young canadian kid to castlebar.....my mother still lived in the big house at the top of the road ....i had told my sons of my youth experiences at the bacon factory ....and suggested they check it out....they went down and brought "sean" with them.....he was about thirteen at the time ....and was of african descent...... he created quite a topic at the factory and one of the workers had him "drive a sow to the chaining....the sow made a charge.....he too had no exposure to real animals....the only pig he knew was porky the pig........
i would be remiss if i did not extend my heartiest congratulations to francis and yourself on your anniversary....
looking back from afar....to those days of the '40s and '50s ...its strange how our memory can carry us back in time....memories....volumes of them....which are so vivid in my mind.....i carry with me always ...those childhood memories ........
......slan....agus ......
....tog go bog e.......
