An old poem makes a long lost connection

Posted by Brian Hoban on March 30, 2011 at 23:37:37:

While visiting Mayo Abbey Primary School some years ago I had read a poem to the class which I had come across in "The Schools Folklore Collection" for Mayo Abbey N.S. After the classroom session the teacher asked me to bring the children to visit St. Adaman’s holy well a short distance from the school.

I proceeded to bring the children to the location and decided to ask the landowner for permission to enter the lands in which the well was situated. As I talked to the lady she informed me that in fact it was her that submitted the poem I had read to the class a short time prior to that.

She had collected the poem from an uncle of hers. This uncle she told me had been a hedge schools teacher, who had lived to the age of 102 years and had never had cause in the course of his lifetime, had any reason to visit a doctor.

Should your school wish to have a visit from a Heritage Specialist phone Brían at: 087 92343504 or see new Heritage in Schools Website.
