Bro Pius was a gentleman. So was Bro Damien, or 'Birdy' as he was affectionately known behind his back. My memories of Damien are of a kind-hearted, gentle man who loved Nature and music. Both Pius and Damien were completely at ease with children, and they were inspirational teachers. I recollect that both men administered mild corporal punishment - as was the norm in the '60s - but never excessively. I would include also Bro Julius in this group as a child-friendly, inspirational teacher. He taught flageolet after school - usually with enthusiasm and good humor. When I met Julius some years after he had left Castlebar, he talked about how the younger Brothers at the time were oppressed by the then Head, Bro George.
