Patrician Park

Posted by Royal on April 25, 2011 at 12:21:16:

When Patrick McDonnell, Building Contractor decided to commence a building scheme at Blackfort, Castlebar in March 1961, he had a competition to name the newly built estate, which consisted of 12 houses.
There was a huge entry, with 6 from the US and 15 from Britain but the winner was that of Mrs. Thomas Cahill, Main Street who submitted the name 'Patrician Park'. 1961 had been acclaimed Patrician Year, in honour of the 15th century of the death of St Patrick, whilst the estate was said to be in the shadow of Croagh Patrick. The prize (wasn't specified what she won)was awarded to her by Cllr. Ml. Heverin, Chairman of the UDC
