URBAN RURAL DIVIDE

Posted by Bruno on August 06, 2011 at 09:10:06:

Listening to the radio this morning the presenter was talking between rivalry between one area and another reminded me of some petty rivalry that existed when I was going to school.

Everybody knows that the Dubs referred to anyone living outside Dublin as Culchies, but many other slang terms also existed.

The Castlebar people called the Westport people "Covies", while Westport persons referred to people from Castlebar as "Fishheads." Persons from Tuam were known as "Shams."

The urban rural rivalry took the form of persons from the town calling their country folk as "Country Mugs", while the country folk called persons from the town "Town Saucepans."

I am sure there were many other slang terms defining the divide between one area and another existed. Can anybody recall such slang terms?

Much of this terminology is being lost however, it would be nice to record such phrases as they are part of our folk history.

If you know of any other such phrases used in the past why not submit them to noticeboard, just for posterity!!!
