I recently got a copy of anirish independent from 1931 for my dad for his 80th birthday and there was quite a bit about o'duffy and the blueshirts. What was most notable was the due deference and indeed admiration that was afforded to hitler and the nazi's by many in Ireland in the early to mid 1930's. Of course with the benefit of hindsight it's easy to accuse them of extreme naivety now but there is also an element of cold shudder down the spine if one contemplates what might have becomeof these little boys playing men's games if hitlers adventures in europe had ultimately proved successful and Ireland had come under control of the reich?
