Gunfire at Lough Lannagh

Posted by Royal on August 31, 2011 at 17:15:13:

In October 1922, the De la Salle Brothers decided to take the students of St. Gerald’s College on an outing. They chartered a number of boats and travelled to Bilberry Island on Lough Lannagh. Everything was going well until about dinner time, when the rattle of machine gun fire was heard. A shower of bullets cut the grass and ploughed up the soil near them so the students had to dash for cover on the Rahins side of the island. When it became clear that they were in a very dangerous predicament, a white flag was made from a table cloth lashed to a tree branch and Brother Urban was chosen to venture forth and provide a safe passage for them. What had happened was that a party of National troops were on route from Westport to Castlebar when they noticed the boys on the island and believed they were Irregulars so they opened fire. After such an ordeal and when the situation was sorted out, they Brothers and pupils apparently carried on with their picnic.
