Hi Bernadette,

In November 2005 I did some research into the history of the town river and found no evidence that the river had its course changed. Old maps, the relevant government bodies etc. were all contacted at the time.

The river's original name of An tSiuir dates back to pre-Norman times. The council agreed in Nov. 2005 that they would revert to the river's original name as it would compliment the River Walk project that the council is currently undertaking and that the unofficial names of Castlebar or Town River would not be used as they wouldn't do the finished scheme any justice. The council will now refer to the river in its Irish and English versions.

Noel Campbell.
