Who can recall the other petrol pumps around the town, and the characters who operated them? As well as Smyth's on Spencer Street you had Henry Downes' and Cathal Duffy's; Jack Mellett's was next to the County Council offices on the Mall; and for years Butty Ketterick ruled over Josie Bourke's pumps on Ellison Street. These were much sought-after summer holiday and weekend jobs that were reasonably well-paid - with the odd tip thrown in. There was little to do except be friendly, and be sure to give the correct measure of fuel and the right change. You'd often go through three books a week!
