John Bourke worked in Rattigans, Castle Street, where Don Racine in now located. He was a prominent GAA man and was involved in the redevelopment of McHale Park in the early 1950s. Remember Rattigans slogan: "No cheques too big, no cheques too small . . . tons of cash to pay them all." This advert appeared on the front page of the Connaught Telegraph, top right hand corner, for many years. There were several pub owners in Rattigans in later years: Tommy Quigley, Harry Leddy and Chris Lawlor. There may have been others as well. There was a Bridewell (short stay prison) in this area, probably 150 years ago.
