It was also the venue in December 1959 for an innovative GAA scheme called 'Back to School Campaign for Mayo Footballers' which was the first in a series of 15 sessions to be held at venues throughout the county.Aimed at schoolboys, the sessions were a mixture of training methods, diet and a push to unearth new footballing talent. It had meant to be held in the Military Barracks but they weren't available. Instructors included TJ McGowan,Rev. P Quinn, J Forde & Sean Flanagan with special guest Tommy Grier of the 1936 Team. The Special Committee included M Flanagan, Johnny Mulvey, S Daly, Rev P Towey and Chairman D Gallagher. A huge crowd packed the Pavillion to see their heroes in the flesh and to participate. Who knows what child was inspired at this gathering and went on to greater things?
