Hi Tempus. The Pavilion building (now demolished) was built on the same site of an earlier Pavilion building. My understanding is that an informal Tennis Club was established in the town in the early 1920’s. The members could use (with permission) the courts of the large houses such as Lawn House and Maryland House. In September 1929, they were granted permission to use the courts outside the old Gaol on the Westport Road. They held their meetings initially in the Courthouse and then afterwards in the Imperial Hotel. The Club was formally founded in 1937 and around this time, they purchased the site up at what is now Pavilion Road and built two courts and a Pavilion Clubhouse. Dances or ‘Hops’ were held in aid of local Charities such as the NSPCC. It was then known as Castlebar Tennis & Badminton Club so when they decided to change the name to Castlebar Lawn Tennis Club in June 1944, a decision was made to erect a brand new building and add two extra courts, which was completed in late 1951.
