Michael Collins was in Castlebar for a monster public meeting on Sunday 2nd April 1922.

The meeting was considered the most heated Treaty meeting to date with weapons drawn by rivals and shots fired. Some were injured including Mrs. Fogarty, Commercial Hotel, Castlebar. In advance of the meeting armed men stopped cars approaching Castlebar, railway lines were torn up and telegraph wires cut.
