Poultry matters

Posted by Mrsk on February 23, 2013 at 15:55:34:

When growing up we kept hens and geese. Hens frequently suffered from "the gawp" - they would stand with their mouths open as if gasping for air. The cure was to put a certain powder in a brown paper bag (all bags were of brown paper), insert the hen's head and allow it to inhale the powder. Does anyone remember the name of the powder ?

We used to preserve eggs in a syrupy solution made by adding "waterglass powder" to water. Was there another name for waterglass powder ?
