Yes, in the late 1950’s a site was offered free of charge, located at the rear of what was then known as the TF Café. Also a site was looked at up at McHale Park but was turned down as the UDC didn’t want to cause any water supply problems to the Bacon Factory. The majority of Councillors agreed that ‘sandy bottom’ where generations of school kids learnt to swim in the river at the rear of the Hat Factory was one of the best sites. Even earlier in the 1930’s, a prospective candidate for the local council campaigned to have the pool located at the Mall until at a later meeting; he couldn’t answer where the water for the pool would come from.
