Methodist Ministry - First woman applicant

Posted by Alan King on June 28, 2013 at 20:29:24:

Earlier this month, the Methodist Church of Ireland appointed its first women president, the Rev Heather Morris who became the first female to lead one of the major Christian churches in Ireland. What is less known is that the first woman to apply in 1952, for a Ministry with the Irish Methodist Church was a Mrs. Aileen Crawford. She was better known under her maiden name as Ms. Letitia Dunbar-Harrison who as Mayo County Librarian (1931-1932) became involved in what became known as the ‘Mayo Library Controversy’. When Mayo County Council members refused to ratify her appointment, the Government replaced the Council with a County Commissioner who appointed Ms Dunbar-Harrison. She married the Rev Robert Crawford, Castlebar based Methodist Minister and they both moved away from the town after a year or so. When he died in 1952, she applied for a Ministry but was unsuccessful. She died in 1994.
