Castlebar River Safety

Posted by Ra on July 23, 2013 at 15:31:31:

As I glanced through the Connaught Telegraph this week the 23th July 2013 I came upon an article on page 20a regarding the retrieval of a road sign from the river bed in Castlebar's town river. There was urban and County councillor "Blackie Gavin" employed by Castlebar town Council as a plumber being lowered down into the river by a rope ! By looking at the pictures you can clearly see that he is not wearing a safety harness or any PPE (personal protective equipment) also there is a sufficient drop into the river. This foolish act was taking place in the company of a group of youths that had stopped to watch near where the men were working. Would you call this setting a good example for the youth and a safe working practice and after all the enforcement by the HSA (Heath and safety authority). One would think that Castlebar town council would have more sense that to engage in such a foolish and very unsafe act.
