Dublin Lockout 1913

Posted by Alan King on September 15, 2013 at 19:29:24:

This month is the anniversary of the ‘Dublin 1913 Lockout’ in which approximately 20,000 workers took to the streets to demand better pay and working conditions. It lasted about six months and was organised by a range of people including James Larkin. A month after the strike started, the local UDC met and a resolution was proposed condemning Murphy and the other employers. A row broke out with councillors taking both sides. There was no one to second it so the resolution was withdrawn and despite reporters wanting the draft resolution, they were refused and asked to leave the meeting. The only other connection the town had to the Dublin Strike was when twenty prisoners in September 1913 were conveyed, under a heavy police escort to Castlebar Gaol, due to the overcrowding of Mountjoy Prison. Large crowds gathered at the station and around the Mall to cheer on the prisoners who were heavily bandaged as a result of baton wounds. ‘Cheers with Larkin’ and ‘Down with Murphy’ were shouted loudly and it was reported that no local representatives were observed at the station or on the Mall.
To continue the theme, Mayo County Library has a number of events to commemorate the Lockout such as a Lecture by Dr. Catriona Clear (NUI Galway) in Castlebar Library on Sept. 18th 2013 at 8pm. Entry free and all welcome. Check out all other events at www.mayolibrary.ie
