Sorry for arriving to this posting so late but one of the first notable persons to be hanged in Castlebar was in 1588 when Sir Richard Bingham accused Edmund Bourke of rebellion. Bourke owned 4000 acres of land including the town and had to be carried to the scaffold due to the fact he was over ninety and had only one leg. Two years later it was sold to Captain John Bingham (relation of Sir Richard) for 100 cows and £20.
