I think you’re referring to Sir Malachy Kelly, Chief Crown Solicitor for Ireland (now the office of Chief State Solicitor) who died on March 25th 1916. Born in 1850, he was appointed Crown Solicitor for Mayo in 1884 and was involved in a number of high profile cases including the Lynchechaun court case. He built up a sizable practice and had an office in Ellison Street. In 1905, he was appointed Chief Crown Solicitor for Ireland and moved to Dublin. Freedom fighter, Ernie O’Malley’s father Luke worked for him and followed him to Dublin upon his appointment. He was knighted in 1912 and built ‘Maryland House’ (located where Maryland Estate is built). Both his brother Patrick and nephew Michael Verdon were well known Solicitors in the town. He was married to Anne, daughter of Sir Patrick Coll (his predecessor in the office of Chief Crown Solicitor for Ireland) and she died in September 1899 aged 30 years. He was survived by a son Ignatius and two daughters; Clair and Mamie and his funeral were one of the biggest in Castlebar for a long time.
