Locals coming home from the pub in the McHale Road / Spencer Street area of the town must have got quite a fright at the sight of a British Redcoat, grasping a blunderpuss dashing down the road on a white stallion, around midnight on a date in April 1961. Tom Carson from Hawthorn Lodge had been playing the role of the English soldier in the Castlebar Patrician Pageant in McHale Park when he was informed that his wife was about to give birth in the local hospital. Knowing that he would take to long to get to his car, he set off on his trusty stead. Through the Mall and up Mountain View, he then tied the horse to the railings outside and on entering was told that his wife, Evelyn had just given birth to their first child -a boy.
Any witnesses must have though they had a few too many!
