Got my copy today and it's a fascinating read so far.
The original 1600s Portreeves (aka Mayors) were elected from the 16 free burgesses (appointed for life) who swore the oath to the Monarch and Protestantism. Bingham served 35 years.
Lots of familiar names over the years.
Then (spolier alert) I skipped to the last chapter to see who dunnit and I see photos of Johnny Mee in 1979 (35 years ago) as a young man with John Henaghan, Christy Tynan and other familiar names with their then Portreeve: Frank Durcan, with his chain of office around his neck looking after the shop. Plus ca change and all that.
Alas no more the burgesses and portreeves?
