Following on from Brian’s contribution, in August 1956, a great grand-daughter of the 'Browne’s of Rahins' visited Castlebar and the former family property and monument in Rahins. Miss Vivian Wheatley, a nurse from Western Australia was on a ‘tour’ of Europe working in various hospitals as she went from country to country. Her mother Molly Browne was born in Australia but was reared and spent many years in Rahins with her grandparents Judge Dowell and Mrs Browne. Her parents were Dr. Dodwell and Mrs. Browne who practised for time in Castlebar before heading off to Australia.
Her mother had left Castlebar in 1922 and she couldn’t visit Ireland until she went to Rahins after hearing so many stories from her parents. She received a great welcome from the people of Rahins – all former tenants of her grandfather. She spent some time in Castlebar and in Pontoon before she headed off on her travels and promising to return in the future.
