Ernie O’Malley (1897 – 1957) – an illustrated talk

Cormac O'Malley will reflect on his Castlebar-born father, Ernie O’Malley, and his role not only as an active IRA commander in the Irish War of Independence but on his subsequent cultural interests in his writings in the United States, poetry, and upon his return to Ireland his acclaimed War of Independence memoir, as well as his art criticism, photography, military history, literary journalism, art collecting, folklore and farming in County Mayo. When released from prison he spent two years in Europe and seven years in the United States and Mexico (1928-1935) before returning to Ireland with his American wife, Helen Hooker of Connecticut. He died aged 59.
